Every once in awhile, Facebook’s “On This Day” reveals evidence of some really painful events from my past.
And, even though I might miss one, once in awhile, for the past few years, as I’ve gone through that feature on Facebook, I’ve methodically erased events and the interactions that triggered pain-full memories.
It is a regular exercise of mine for cleaning emotional house, and clearing space.
DELETE feels good, every single time.
It’s like finding something smelly in back of the fridge. We have a choice as to whether we close the door, and leave it there; or remove it—once and for all.
I have NEVER regretted letting go of pain. I don’t wax nostalgic, for the good ol’ days; or for the bad ones, either. I definitely don’t need reminders of times I cried because of pain, heartache or sorrow. I don’t make dates on my calendar to mourn what was, what was lost, or what could have been. I have no need to continually re-open the door and shed light on long-ago closed hurts and healed wounds; nor do I need reminders of past pain to be thankful for the present’s pleasure.
Every beautiful day’s notation is kept, only if it contains something that makes me smile.
To keep anything more is heavy, emotional HOARDING.
There’s enough drama and pain on AND off of Facebook to go around. I don’t need my own long-gone ones to clutter my own timeline.
Bottom line, as a result of this practice, I’m emotionally lighter. I smile more. I’m happy about my present, and excited for my future.
What do you hang onto, that weighs you down, and really doesn’t serve your present or future emotional health and happiness?
You are the only one who can take your negative, painful clutter out to the trash.
Isn’t it time you wheel some of your junk to the curb?
